Attractions
Further afield are many grand
châteaux all within 40 minutes to 1½ hours drive from our cottage.
Villandry,
Brézé,
Montreuil-Bellay, Chenonceaux and Ussay to name but a few.
The Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud
has been many things incuding a prison up until 1963 but now combines heritage
with concerts and exhibitions. Historically it is linked to Henry II
Plantagenet, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart.
Le Mans with its museum of
racing cars is an 1 hour drive north from us and well worth the visit
- tickets
can be purchased in the gift shop for visits inside and possible visits to the
pit area.
Nantes is worth a visit if only
to watch the huge mechanical elephant and get sprayed with misted water. Nearby
are a variety of shops and the château of Nantes.
Chariot races, lions, tigers,
Roman gladiators and fantastical spectacles are all to be found at Puy de Fou,
the second largest attraction in France,
about 1½ hours drive but well worth the visit and popular with both children and
adults.
If a visit to the zoo is on
your list then we are lucky to have three very good ones close by
- Zoo La
Fleche, 35 minutes from us covers 18 hectares and is involved in many
conservation programmes, as are the BioParc Zoo in
Doué la Fontaine, 15 hectares
and 45 minutes from us and slightly further is the ZooParc de Beauval, about 1hr
20 mins, and covers 35 hectares and is classed as "one out of the ten most
beautiful zoos in the world".
In fact there is so much to do and see in our region that the local tourist office currently provides a 193 page guide, a copy of which will be found in our cottage for your use to plan whatever events you may wish to be involved with.
There are
at least 8 superb golf courses within our region, several are quite challenging, but all
have been well designed, with uncrowded fairways, excellent greens, good locations
and at moderate prices.
